Bazooka Storage Tube

With the awkward storage of the anti-flap kit and rafters for the awning in the rear tunnel boot sharing the space with the diesel heater we decided to mount some sort of external storage. Looking into various tube sizes and different ways we could close the tube and secure it we decided to use a 150mm diameter standard PVC waste pipe from Mico Plumbing and Bazooka end caps and mounting brackets from KRSAustralia.com.au. These end caps come in two colours – black or orange. We chose orange as it is the feature colour on the Dirt Road Extreme. The caps are lockable with a padlock.

For securing the PVC pipe to the caravan we used the safe interlocking design Bazooka clamps to mount it on the rear bumper. Mounting to the rear bumper was carried out by using 8mm Jack nuts as these were able to be fitted to the bumper struts without needed specialised equipment. The Jack Nuts have a larger internal surface locking area as opposed to standard rib nuts. A jig for mounting them and locking them in place was made out of a piece of flat aluminium, 8mm bolt and packing washers. We used 3 brackets to mount our tube with two securing bolts per bracket.

After much research it was found to be cheaper to add a vinyl wrap to the tube as painting required special primer and paint to achieve the black finished look we were after. We used Shane Hilton from Design Shop in Central Otago to cut and apply the vinyl wrap.
